Dehydrins and Soluble Sugars Involved in Cold Acclimation of Rosa wichurana and Rose Cultivar ‘Yesterday’

Rose is the most economically important ornamental plant. However, cold stress seriously affects survival and regrowth of garden roses in northern regions. Cold acclimation was studied using two genotypes (Rosa wichurana R. hybrida ‘Yesterday’) selected from a rose breeding program. During winter season (November to April), hardiness stems, soluble sugar content, expression dehydrins related key genes metabolism were analyzed. ‘Yesterday’ more cold-hardy acclimated faster, reaching its maximum December. relatively less cold-hardy, only January after prolonged exposure freezing temperatures. Dehydrin transcripts accumulated significantly during November–January both genotypes. Soluble sugars are highly involved acclimation, with sucrose oligosaccharides correlated hardiness. Sucrose occupied highest proportion total November–January, downregulation RhSUS found genotypes, while upregulation RhSPS observed RhINV2 wichurana. Oligosaccharides November February decreased low level April. RhRS6 had significant December This study provides insight into mechanism by combining transcription patterns metabolite quantification.
